John A. MacIver
Since his call to the bar in 1994, John's practice has focused primarily on litigation. He has conducted trials in both civil and criminal courts, including, jury work. John has argued in the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Manitoba Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He has also conducted hearings and appeals before many Provincial and Federal tribunals. John was co-counsel in the Canadian class action brought against Merck over its drug, Vioxx.
John's risk management experience includes commercial insurance disputes, coverage cases, professional liability, products liability, negligence, tort and contract claims. He has acted for both plaintiffs and defendants in all manner of personal injury claims. His commercial and general litigation experience includes employment and wrongful dismissal claims, share rights litigation, insolvency and collections.
John is a past chair of the Canadian Bar Association Insurance Section for Southern Alberta. He is a member of the Defense Research Institute and is involved in the International Legal Issues Specialized Litigation Group.
John has also been a member of the Manitoba Chapter of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute and has completed the Level One Arbitration Course.
John has appeared in both national and local broadcasts and newspapers. He has taught in the area of construction law and is a contributing author to The Commercial Laws of Canada published by Oceana Publications, New York.
He has also served the community in a variety of roles including Vice Chairman of Tamarack Rehabilitation Centre, volunteer with the Community Legal Education program, speaker at local organizations and with the Canadian Bar Associations Law Day program.
