Expertise - Regulatory

Our administrative law group has extensive experience in the conduct of complex administrative proceedings before a wide array of administrative tribunals. Those include the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, the National Energy Board, the Alberta Securities Commission, the Surface Rights Board, the Municipal Government Board, the Labour Relations Board, the Human Rights Commission, the Workers' Compensation Board, the Workers' Compensation Board Appeals Commission and numerous municipal, subdivision and development appeal boards. As is consistently the case throughout the firm's practice, we bring a business oriented approach to our administrative law practice. We recognize that administrative proceedings can be costly and time consuming and we therefore conduct our administrative practice with a focus on trying to achieve our clients' desired results in the most efficient and effective manner.

In the administrative field, our clients vary from some of Canada's largest corporations to governments, start-up corporations and individuals. Before the Energy and Utilities Board, for example, we have argued a wide variety of cases touching on all aspects of the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry. Our lawyers have also done extensive work before the National Energy Board with regard to gas export licensing, short-term gas export orders and pipeline and facilities and tariff applications. With regard to securities law, we have appeared before the Alberta Securities Commission and the Ontario Securities Commission with regard to many aspects of securities, administration and enforcement. As a result of our firm's strength in commercial litigation, our administrative lawyers are at all times ready to advise our clients on the available avenues for appeal or other challenge of administrative decisions to the courts by way of appeal or other form of judicial review.
